Five Simple Tips to Beat the Texas Heat

Summer is a wonderful time to enjoy outdoor activities and spend quality time with your loved ones. However, the rising temperatures can also make you feel grumpy, irritable, and uncomfortable. During the summer, staying cool and hydrated is essential to avoid heat-related illnesses like heatstroke, dehydration, and heat exhaustion. Here are five simple tips to help beat the heat and stay cool this summer.

Stay hydrated

Drinking plenty of water and other fluids is critical for staying cool and healthy during summertime. As the temperature rises, your body sweats to cool itself down, leaving you dehydrated. To stay hydrated, drink at least 6-8 glasses of water daily and avoid sugary, caffeinated, and alcoholic beverages that can dehydrate you.

Electrolyte drinks, such as Skratch Labs Sport Hydration Mix and Liquid I.V., are also a great way to stay hydrated during the hot summer months. Electrolytes are minerals in your body that help with fluid balance, nerve and muscle function, and energy. When you sweat, your body loses electrolytes. If not replenished, it can lead to dehydration and other heat-related illnesses.

Wear light & lose clothing

Summer calls for wearing light, breathable, and loose-fitting clothes that allow air to circulate and keep you cool. Opt for cotton, linen, and other natural fabrics that absorb sweat and are easy on your skin, and avoid tight-fitting clothes or synthetics that trap heat and moisture. It is also best to steer clear of clothing with heavy embellishments, such as beads, and from wearing dark colors. Light colors are the best option, as they reflect sunlight and keep your body temperature cooler by keeping heat away from your skin.

Stay indoors during peak hours

During the summer months, it can be difficult to enjoy outdoor activities without feeling overheated and uncomfortable. So when you go outside, try to take frequent breaks and stay under the shade.

When possible, stay indoors during the hottest parts of the day, typically between 11 am and 4 pm, and enjoy indoor activities like reading, knitting, or playing board games with your family. If you want to go somewhere with AC, there are plenty of places to go indoors to help you beat the heat while still having fun—the mall, movie theater, escape room, Dave & Buster’s, aquarium, museum, and indoor water park.

Use cooling accessories

There are many cooling accessories that you can use to stay cool and comfortable during the hot weather. You can use a handheld fan/neck fan, a spray bottle, or a cooling neck wrap to cool you down or try out some cooling headwear, including hats, caps, and visors. You can also take a cold shower or bath or use a cold compress on your neck and other pulse points to bring down your body temperature.

Cooling mattresses, pillows, and bedding are great bedroom products to invest in to help beat the heat. Cooling bedroom products are designed with special fabrics that wick away moisture and sweat, helping you stay cool during hot summer nights.

Keep your home cool

Keeping your home cool is essential to avoid heat-related illnesses. You can use shades, curtains, or blinds to block the sunlight and insulate your home. Closing the doors you aren’t using in your home is another effective way to keep cool. By closing off unused rooms, you reduce the amount of air that circulates through your home, trapping the cool air inside and keeping hot air out.

You can also use fans and air-conditioned units to circulate air and reduce humidity. To help maintain a comfortable temperature, set your ceiling fans to rotate counter-clockwise and turn them on at high speed. Having the fan rotate counter-clockwise during the summer will help create a cool breeze because it pushes the air down, making the room feel several degrees cooler.

Don’t let the summer heat get you down. By following these five simple tips, you can stay cool, comfortable, and healthy during the hot season. Remember to stay hydrated, wear light and breathable clothes, avoid peak hours, use cooling accessories, and keep your home nice and cool. With these tips in mind, you can enjoy the summer season to the fullest with your loved ones and experience refreshing and enjoyable activities.
